Fire Compliance Built Around Little People and Busy Timetables

A childcare centre or school is one of the most sensitive occupancies a fire technician can work in. Safe QLD Fire Protection services and tests alarms, extinguishers, hose reels, emergency lighting and exit signage in line with AS 1851-2012, and we do it in a way that respects sleep times, sessions and school bells.

Equipment and Signage at Child-Safe Heights

Reachable for Educators, Out of Reach for Curious Hands

Early learning environments have a requirement most buildings never think about: fire equipment must be instantly accessible to staff, yet positioned and secured with small children in mind. When we commission or upgrade a centre, we tailor the placement of extinguishers, blankets, hose reels, manual call points and identification signage to meet child-safe height and access standards, exactly as we delivered on a new centre fitout in Ipswich.

  • Extinguisher and blanket mounting positions reviewed room by room
  • ID signs and evacuation diagrams sighted clearly at adult eye level
  • Exit paths, door hardware and signage checked against NCC/BCA requirements
  • Practical advice for educators on equipment access during an emergency
Running multiple centres? We deliver group-wide maintenance programs across portfolios of early learning sites, with consistent pricing, one point of contact and consolidated compliance reporting for head office.

Common Questions

Childcare & Education Fire Safety FAQs

How often does a childcare centre's fire equipment need to be tested?
AS 1851-2012 sets the schedule. Fire extinguishers and hose reels need six-monthly inspections, fire detection and alarm systems need monthly, six-monthly and annual testing, and emergency and exit lighting needs six-monthly discharge tests under AS/NZS 2293.2. Safe QLD builds all of these frequencies into one maintenance program so nothing is missed between visits.
Can you service our centre without disrupting the children?
Yes. We routinely schedule testing around session times, sleep periods and pick-up windows, and we can attend before opening or after close where alarm testing would be disruptive. Our technicians are briefed on working in operating early learning environments and sign in under your visitor and safety procedures.
What does child-safe height signage and equipment placement involve?
In early learning environments, extinguishers, blankets, manual call points and identification signs need to be positioned so staff can reach them instantly while remaining out of easy reach of small children. On new fitouts and upgrades we commission hose reels, alarms and signage with tailored placement to meet child-safe height and access requirements, as we did for a new centre fitout in Ipswich.
What compliance records will our centre receive?
Every routine inspection and test is recorded as required by AS 1851-2012, including test dates, results, defects found and corrective actions. We keep your on-site logbook up to date and issue clear digital compliance reports, so your centre is always ready for a QFES audit or an assessment and rating visit.
