Fire Hydrants, Hose Reels & Water Supply Across SEQ

One of South East Queensland's premier fire protection and maintenance contractors. Boosters, ring mains, landing valves, hose reels and the water supply behind them, installed and flow tested to AS 2419.1 and AS 2441, and maintained to AS 1851-2012. Whether pumped or un-pumped, Safe QLD has the equipment and expertise required to prove your hydrant system will perform on the day the attending fire crew connects to it.

Hydrants & Water Supply

The Water Supply Is the System, the Hydrant Is Just the Outlet

A hydrant system is judged on one thing, whether it can deliver the designed flow and pressure at the most hydraulically disadvantaged outlet on the worst day of its life. That performance depends on the whole chain: the town main or tank feeding it, the ring main and its isolation valves, the booster assembly at the frontage, and every landing valve on every level. Safe QLD installs, tests and maintains all of it, and reports on it as a single system rather than a list of unrelated items.

With a fleet of service and installation technicians and a complete in-house team of industry experts, we handle everything from a routine six-monthly attendance on a strata tower through to booster relocations, ring main extensions and hydrant coverage upgrades on major works. Where a project needs design input, our in-house design and drafting team works it up and coordinates with your hydraulic consultant and certifier.

Hydrants & Landing Valves

Internal and external hydrants, landing valves, hose connections, cabinets and signage inspected, functionally tested, repaired and replaced under the AS 1851-2012 routine.

Booster Assemblies

Booster cabinets, inlets, non-return and isolation valves, gauges, block plans and fire brigade signage, checked so a responding crew can connect and charge the system without hesitation.

Ring Mains & Valving

Underground and above-ground ring mains, isolation valve position and security, buried valve boxes, pipework condition and extensions or diversions for new works.

Fire Hose Reels

AS/NZS 1221 hose reels inspected six-monthly under AS 1851-2012, including accessibility, hose and nozzle condition, full run-out, flow check and rewind, with repair or replacement on the spot.

Annual Hydrant Flow Testing to AS 2419 Design Performance

Buildings change. Mains get tapped, valves get closed and left closed, corrosion narrows a ring main, and a system that passed a decade ago quietly stops making its numbers. A flow test is the only routine that catches it. We test at the most hydraulically disadvantaged outlet, record pressure and flow, and compare the result against the design figures on your block plan.

  • Monthly visual inspections of hydrants, landing valves, boosters and cabinets
  • Six-monthly functional testing of landing valves and hydrant operation
  • Annual flow testing verified against AS 2419 design performance
  • Five-yearly overhaul of landing valves and check valves, with components replaced where they fail the standard’s criteria
  • Isolation valve position and security checks across the full ring main
  • Block plan, hydrant identification and booster signage verified for fire brigade access

Where a system fails to make its designed flow, we do not simply record the defect. Our technicians investigate the cause, whether it is a partially closed valve, a supply restriction or a booster fault, and quote the rectification.

Hose Reels, First Attack and the Six-Monthly Routine

Fire hose reels are the first-attack capability you put in the hands of occupants, and they are the item auditors find seized, obstructed or leaking more than any other. Safe QLD services them on the same attendance as your hydrants, which keeps site disruption down and puts everything in one consolidated report.

  • Six-monthly inspection to AS 1851-2012 with full run-out, flow and rewind test
  • Hose, nozzle, guide arm, stop valve and reel condition assessed and recorded
  • Accessibility and obstruction checks, with clear photographic evidence
  • Repairs, hose replacement and new reel installation by our own technicians
  • Coverage reviewed against the building layout where tenancies have changed

Because hose reels usually share a water supply with the hydrant system, testing them together is the only way to see how the supply behaves under real demand.

Sprinklers and Pumps Have Their Own Deep Coverage

Hydrants and hose reels are only part of your water-based fire protection. Automatic sprinkler systems and the pumpsets and storage that feed them are engineered disciplines in their own right, and we cover both in detail on their own pages.

Fire Sprinkler Systems

Design, installation, modification, certification and AS 1851 maintenance of automatic sprinkler systems to AS 2118. Alarm valve sets, flow switches, mains and ranges, tenancy fitout alterations, annual system testing and five-yearly comprehensive assessment including pipe flushing and head checks.

Fire Pumps & Water Storage

Diesel and electric fire pumpsets, jockey pumps, controllers and storage tanks. Monthly runs under load, annual performance testing against the rated duty point, controller fault finding, pump replacement and tank works, so the supply behind your hydrants and sprinklers is never the weak link.

Common Questions

Hydrant & Hose Reel FAQs

What does a fire hydrant flow test actually prove?
A flow test measures the pressure and flow the hydrant system can deliver at the most hydraulically disadvantaged outlet, then compares it against the design figures recorded on your block plan under AS 2419. It is the only routine that proves the water supply, the ring main and the booster still perform together as designed. AS 1851-2012 requires flow testing at the annual and five-yearly routines, and every result lands in your digital compliance report.
How often do fire hydrants and boosters need to be serviced?
AS 1851-2012 sets monthly visual inspections, six-monthly functional testing of landing valves and hydrant operation, annual flow testing and a five-yearly overhaul. Systems with a fire pump attached also carry the pump routines, which we cover on our fire pumps and water storage page. Safe QLD schedules all of it together so the whole water supply is proven on the one attendance.
What is involved in a five-yearly hydrant overhaul?
The five-yearly is an inspection and overhaul routine, not an automatic parts replacement. Landing valves are stripped, inspected and overhauled, and re-seated or repacked as required. Isolation and non-return valves are proven, gauges are verified against a calibrated test gauge, and pipework and the booster assembly are inspected, along with hydrostatic and flow testing and a condition report on the ring main and water supply. Components are replaced when they fail the standard's criteria, not on schedule. It is the deepest service in the hydrant cycle and the one most often missed by buildings without a managed maintenance program, which is why it frequently uncovers restrictions that have been developing for years.
Can fire hose reels be used on electrical fires?
No. Water-based hose reels should never be used on electrical fires due to the risk of electrocution. The correct portable extinguisher, such as a CO2 unit, should be used instead. Safe QLD reviews your extinguisher coverage alongside hose reel servicing so every risk in the building is matched to the right equipment, all under the one contract.
